Chapter 2 - The Final Delivery

I drove straight to my parents' house, the wooden box resting heavily in the passenger seat.

My mother’s car and Chelsea’s SUV were both parked in the driveway.

I walked through the front door without knocking, holding my father’s weekly pill organizer in my hand.

My mother was in the kitchen, sipping coffee with Chelsea while Carter played on his tablet.

"Finally," my mother snapped, not even looking up.

"You’re late, Lucy, and your father is complaining about his back pain."

I walked over to the counter and dropped the plastic pill organizer directly into the trash can.

The loud thud made both of them jump.

"What are you doing?" Chelsea gasped, her eyes wide.

"I am resigning," I said, my voice dangerously calm.

"You can sort his pills, drive him to rehab, and pay his medical bills from now on."

My mother stood up, her face turning crimson with anger.

"You selfish brat, he is your father!" she screamed.

"And you are his wife," I replied, staring her down.

"I am no longer your resource, and I am no longer funding this family."

I turned on my heel and walked out the door.

My mother chased me into the yard, shouting threats that I would be disowned.

I simply got into my car and drove away.

For the first time in my life, the rearview mirror showed me leaving them behind.
