Chapter 3 - The Reckoning

The next morning, I sat in the polished office of a ruthless estate lawyer named Mr. Sterling.

I placed the contents of the wooden box on his mahogany desk.

He reviewed the documents in absolute silence for ten minutes.

When he finally looked up, his eyes were sharp with predatory focus.

"This is textbook fraud, embezzlement, and breach of fiduciary duty," Mr. Sterling said.

"They forged your signature on these release forms when you turned eighteen."

I felt a wave of nausea, realizing just how deep their betrayal went.

"I want everything back," I told him, thinking of Dany’s future.

"I want every cent they stole, and I don't care what happens to them."

Mr. Sterling smiled, a cold, calculating expression.

"We will freeze their assets by the end of the week," he promised.

That afternoon, my phone began to blow up with frantic texts from Chelsea.

Her credit cards had been declined at a luxury boutique.

My mother called fourteen times in an hour.

I blocked both of their numbers and took Dany to the park.

We ate ice cream on a sunny bench, completely undisturbed.

The storm was hitting them, but my sky was finally clear.
