Chapter 8 - The Courtroom Drama

The day of the hearing arrived with a heavy, gray downpour.

I sat at the plaintiff's table, my back straight and my head held high.

Across the aisle, my mother and Chelsea looked pale, exhausted, and terrified.

Aunt Colleen sat directly behind me, offering her silent, steadfast support.

When my mother took the stand, her usual arrogance completely vanished under Mr. Sterling’s brutal cross-examination.

He presented the forged signatures, the bank transfers, and the receipts.

He painted a crystal-clear picture of a mother who robbed one daughter to spoil another.

"Did you or did you not use the plaintiff's trust fund to purchase a luxury vehicle for your other daughter?" Mr. Sterling demanded.

My mother stammered, looking toward the judge for help that wasn't coming.

"It was family money!" she finally snapped, showing her true colors.

"She owed us for raising her!"

A collective gasp echoed through the courtroom.

The judge looked at her with absolute disgust.

Chelsea buried her face in her hands, weeping loudly.

The illusion of their perfect, happy family had been completely shattered on the public record.
