Chapter 5 - The Desperate Ambush

My mother, realizing that her financial ruin was imminent, resorted to desperate measures.
She somehow found out the schedule for Dany’s preschool spring play.
I was sitting in the front row, waiting for my son to come on stage dressed as a sunflower.

She was holding a massive, expensive toy truck and wearing her best pearls.
"Grandma is here to see her special boy," she whispered loudly, trying to draw attention.
I turned to her, my blood turning to ice.
"You don't get to pretend he exists just because you need my money," I hissed.
"I am his family," she hissed back, her mask slipping.
"If you don't drop the lawsuit, I will drag your name through the mud in this town."
I stood up immediately and signaled the school's security officer.
"This woman is harassing me and is not authorized to be near my child," I said clearly.
The security guard escorted a humiliated, screaming woman out of the auditorium.
The other parents stared in shock.
I sat back down just as the curtain rose.
