Chapter 1 - The Hidden Truth

The morning air was thick with tension as I pulled into Aunt Colleen’s driveway.
Her house was small and unassuming, tucked away at the edge of town.
I left Dany with a trusted babysitter, knowing this conversation was not for a child's ears.
Colleen stood on her porch, her arms wrapped tightly around her waist as if she were holding herself together.
She led me inside without saying a single word.
On her dining room table sat a faded, heavy wooden box.
"Your father asked me to keep this safe a long time ago," she whispered, her voice trembling.
"He made me promise never to show your mother."
I reached out and unlatched the brass lock.
Inside, there were stacks of financial documents, bank statements, and a copy of a will.
It was my grandfather’s will.
I scanned the first page and felt the breath leave my lungs.
My grandfather had left his entire estate to me, the eldest granddaughter.
The money was meant for my education, my future, and my family.
But my parents had kept it a secret, using a legal loophole to control the trust.
They had drained the accounts to pay for Chelsea’s lavish wedding, her down payment on a house, and Carter’s private schooling.
"They stole from you, Lucy," Colleen cried softly.
"And your mother threatened to cut off your dad’s medical care if he ever told you the truth."
Everything made sickening sense now.
I was never just their unpaid nurse; I was their bank.
I closed the box, a cold, unshakeable rage settling in my chest.

They had taken my future to fund my sister's perfect life.
And they had the nerve to call my son "not real."
