Chapter 7 - The Subpoena

My mother tried to hide from the process servers for two weeks.

She refused to answer the door and kept her curtains drawn tight.

But Mr. Sterling was a man who always got the job done.

He hired a private investigator who tracked her to a fancy country club luncheon.

While she was boasting to her friends about Chelsea’s imaginary success, a man in a suit approached her table.

He dropped a thick stack of legal documents directly onto her expensive salad.

"You have been served," he announced loudly enough for the entire dining room to hear.

The humiliation was absolute and public.

Her friends gasped as she stared at the papers detailing her massive fraud.

She called me that evening, screaming incoherently into my voicemail.

She threatened to ruin my life, to take Dany away, to destroy everything I loved.

I simply forwarded the voice messages to Mr. Sterling as evidence of intimidation.
