Chapter 9 - Building the Trap

Back at Sarah’s guest house, we spent the entire weekend building an ironclad case.

We had Chloe’s financial documents, the private investigator’s photos, and the audio recording from the hallway.

“This isn't just a divorce case anymore, this is criminal fraud,” Sarah said, organizing the files.

She made copies of everything, storing the originals in a secure fireproof safe.

“Judge Sterling is presiding over the emergency hearing on Tuesday,” Sarah informed me.

The memory of the judge ordering Marcus out of the courtroom gave me a glimmer of hope.

“We need to make sure Marcus walks into that courtroom thinking he has already won,” I suggested.

Sarah grinned, catching onto my plan immediately.

We drafted a fake settlement offer, one that looked desperate and pathetic.

It proposed that I would surrender the house and take minimal child support, provided I kept full custody.

“When his lawyer sees this, they will think you are broke and terrified,” Sarah laughed.

We emailed the fake offer to his legal team on Monday morning.

Within an hour, Marcus's attorney replied with a smug rejection, demanding even more concessions.

Marcus was taking the bait perfectly.

He truly believed I was a helpless, hysterical woman with no resources left.

That evening, I sat on the porch, rocking Leo under the starry Chicago sky.

I kissed his little forehead, feeling a sense of absolute clarity.

Tomorrow, I was going to ruin the man who tried to destroy my life.

The fear that had paralyzed me for months was completely gone.

In its place was a cold, calculating determination to protect my son at all costs.
