Chapter 3 - The First Cry

With Marcus and Eleanor forcibly removed, the atmosphere in the delivery room shifted instantly.

The tension melted away, replaced by the focused, urgent energy of the medical team.

Dr. Evans pulled up a stool at the foot of the bed, her expression serious but kind.

“Okay, Mrs. Vance, it is time to push with everything you have,” she said firmly.

I gathered every ounce of strength left in my exhausted, betrayed body.

I pushed until my lungs burned, until the edges of my vision darkened with impending unconsciousness.

“One more big push, you’re almost there!” the nurses cheered in unison.

I let out a guttural scream, a sound born of months of emotional abuse and betrayal.

And then, the room fell silent for one terrifying, agonizing second.

My heart stopped beating as I waited for the sound that would tell me everything was okay.

A sharp, piercing cry suddenly erupted, filling the cold room with the warmest sound imaginable.

Tears streamed down my face as the doctor lifted a tiny, red, screaming infant.

“It’s a beautiful, healthy baby boy,” Dr. Evans announced, a massive smile spreading across her face.

They quickly cleaned him up and laid his warm, fragile body against my chest.

He was so small, so perfect, and entirely mine.

I wrapped my arms around him, feeling an overwhelming wave of fierce, maternal protection.

“I will never let them hurt you,” I whispered into his soft, fine hair.

For a few precious moments, the outside world, the divorce, and Marcus ceased to exist.

But I knew the peace was temporary.

The real war for my son’s future had only just begun.
