Chapter 1 - The Ride to Survival

The piercing wail of the ambulance sirens shattered the tense silence of the Chicago streets.

I lay strapped to the gurney, my body convulsing with another violent contraction.

Every jolt of the moving vehicle sent fresh waves of agony radiating through my spine.

Paramedic Sarah gripped my hand tightly, her eyes filled with a fierce, reassuring focus.

“You’re doing great, sweetie, just keep breathing through the pain,” she instructed calmly.

I tried to nod, but a sudden gasp escaped my lips as the pressure intensified.

Back in the courtroom, Marcus hadn’t even bothered to ride in the ambulance with me.

He had stood there, adjusting his designer tie, acting as if my emergency was an inconvenience to his schedule.

Judge Sterling’s furious voice still echoed in my ears, a rare comfort in the chaos.

He had literally ordered my husband to step back, protecting me when I was most vulnerable.

But right now, my only concern was the tiny, fragile life fighting to enter this world.

“Her blood pressure is spiking dangerously high!” the other paramedic shouted over the radio.

Panic seized my chest, squeezing my heart until I thought it might burst.

“Is my baby going to be okay?” I cried out, tears mixing with the sweat on my face.

Sarah wiped my forehead with a cool cloth, maintaining her professional composure.

“We are minutes away from Chicago General, just hold on for me,” she urged.

I closed my eyes, praying to whatever higher power was listening to keep my child safe.

Marcus had taken my money, my home, and my peace of mind.

I swore in that cramped, sterile ambulance that he would never take my child.

The vehicle finally screeched to a halt, and the doors flew open to reveal a swarm of hospital staff.
