Chapter 20 - The Final Victory

The sun began to set on Leo’s first birthday party, casting a warm, golden glow over the house.
The guests slowly packed up to leave, hugging me tightly and promising to visit soon.
Chloe lingered at the door, holding baby Lily on her hip.
“Thank you for everything, honestly. You changed my life,” Chloe said, pulling me into a warm embrace.
“We saved each other, Chloe. Drive safe,” I smiled, waving as she headed to her car.
I carried a very sleepy, frosting-covered Leo upstairs to the bathroom.
As I washed the cake out of his fine, brown hair, he rested his tiny head against my chest.
I wrapped him in a fluffy towel and carried him into his bright, peaceful nursery.
I rocked him in the chair by the window, watching the stars slowly appear in the night sky.
I thought about the terrified, helpless woman sitting in that Chicago courtroom one year ago.
She felt like a stranger to me now.
That woman had been shattered, but the pieces had reassembled into unbreakable armor.
I placed Leo gently into his crib, kissing his soft cheek as he instantly fell asleep.
“I love you more than life itself,” I whispered to him.
I walked downstairs, pouring myself a small glass of expensive wine to celebrate surviving my hardest year.
I stepped out onto the back porch, breathing in the cool, fresh autumn air.
The silence of the house wasn't lonely; it was profoundly peaceful.
Marcus was in a cell, Eleanor was ruined, and I was completely, beautifully free.
I raised my glass to the starry sky, offering a silent toast to the incredible, unpredictable journey of motherhood.

The story of my broken marriage had ended in that courtroom.
But the beautiful story of our new lives had only just begun.
