Chapter 7 - An Unexpected Ally

The day before my hospital discharge, I received a visitor I never expected.
A young woman stood awkwardly in the doorway of my room, holding a bouquet of cheap flowers.
It was Chloe.
She looked exhausted, the glamorous facade from the investigator's photos completely stripped away.
“Can I come in?” she asked softly, her eyes darting to baby Leo.
I tightened my grip on my son, instantly defensive.
“What do you want?” I demanded, glaring at the woman who had helped destroy my marriage.
Chloe stepped inside and closed the door, tears instantly spilling down her cheeks.
“I didn't know he was married, I swear to you,” she sobbed, sinking into the guest chair.
She explained that Marcus had told her he was a widower, that his wife had passed away in a tragic accident.
“When I found out the truth last week, I tried to leave him,” Chloe confessed.
“But he threatened me, he said if I left, he would make sure I never saw my baby again,” she continued, crying harder.
I stared at her, realizing we were both victims of the same sociopathic man.
Marcus didn't love either of us; he only loved control and ownership.
“Why are you here, Chloe?” I asked, my tone softening slightly.
She reached into her designer handbag and pulled out a thick manila envelope.
“These are the bank statements for the offshore accounts he used to hide your money,” she revealed.
She placed the envelope on the edge of my bed.
“He keeps his laptop password on a sticky note in his car, I took photos of everything,” she explained.
I opened the envelope, scanning the documents that proved Marcus was committing massive tax fraud.
“If you testify against him, I will make sure the court protects you too,” I promised her.

Chloe nodded, a look of desperate relief washing over her face.
We formed an unspoken pact right there in the hospital room to take him down together.
