Chapter 15 - The Knock at the Door

Two weeks passed in peaceful bliss as I settled into a new routine with Leo.
The house finally felt warm again, purged of Marcus's toxic presence.
I had changed all the locks, installed a top-tier security system, and hired a night nanny to help me catch up on sleep.
One rainy Tuesday evening, a sharp knock at the front door startled me from my book.
I checked the security camera feed on my phone, expecting a delivery driver.
Instead, I saw two uniformed police officers standing on my porch.
My heart skipped a beat, a momentary flash of panic gripping my chest.
I opened the door cautiously, keeping the heavy metal chain engaged.
“Mrs. Vance? I am Detective Miller with the Chicago PD financial crimes unit,” the older officer said, holding up a badge.
“Yes, how can I help you?” I asked, unlocking the chain and opening the door wider.
“We just wanted to inform you formally that Marcus Vance was taken into custody an hour ago,” he stated professionally.
A wave of shock washed over me.
“He attempted to board a one-way flight to the Cayman Islands, violating his court order,” the detective explained.
Marcus had tried to run.
He had tried to flee the country to escape the impending criminal charges, acting like a true coward.
“He is currently being held without bail as a severe flight risk,” the detective added.
I thanked the officers, closing the door and leaning against the heavy wood.
A soft laugh bubbled up in my chest, eventually turning into full, relieved sobs.
The nightmare was genuinely over.
Marcus was locked in a cell, unable to hurt me, Chloe, or our children ever again.
I walked upstairs to the nursery, watching Leo sleep soundly in his perfectly assembled crib.

“We are safe, my sweet boy,” I whispered to the quiet room.
The monster was finally behind bars, exactly where he belonged.
