Chapter 18 - A New Foundation

With the divorce finalized and the settlement money secured, it was time to rebuild.
I sold the large marital home; it held too many dark memories of Marcus's emotional abuse.
Using the funds from the house and my half of Chloe's condo sale, I bought a beautiful cottage in the suburbs.
It had a large, fenced-in backyard with a sprawling oak tree, perfect for a tire swing.
I painted Leo’s new room a bright, cheerful yellow, leaving all the dark, oppressive energy in Chicago.
I even started my own small consulting business, working from home so I wouldn't miss a single moment of Leo's milestones.
One afternoon, the doorbell rang, and the mail carrier handed me a certified letter.
It was from the state penitentiary where Marcus was currently serving his four-year sentence.
I stared at his cramped, desperate handwriting on the envelope for a long time.
My heart didn't race, and my hands didn't shake.
I felt absolutely nothing for the man who once controlled my every waking thought.
Without opening it, I walked over to the paper shredder in my home office.
I fed the envelope into the machine, listening to the satisfying whir as his words were destroyed into unreadable confetti.
I didn't owe him my time, my forgiveness, or my attention.
Leo giggled from his playmat on the floor, shaking a bright red rattle in the air.
I scooped him up into my arms, blowing raspberries on his stomach until he shrieked with laughter.
This was my world now, built on a foundation of fierce love and unshakeable resilience.

No one would ever take my peace away from me again.
I had fought a war for this happiness, and I was going to enjoy every single second of it.
