Chapter 6 - The Jailhouse Phone Call

At 6:00 AM, my cell phone vibrated in my pocket. The caller ID read COUNTY CORRECTIONAL FACILITY.
I stepped out of Elena’s hospital room into the quiet hallway and pressed answer.
“Marcus!” my mother’s voice barked through the receiver, sounding utterly exhausted and furious. “This has gone far enough. I spent the night in a concrete cell! Chloe won't stop crying. Call your lawyer, wire the bail money, and get us out of here immediately.”
She wasn't asking. She was demanding, still clinging to the delusion that she was in control.
“I don’t have any money for you,” I said, my voice eerily calm.
“Don't be dramatic! Use the joint estate account. Transfer the fifty thousand for the bond and we will deal with this ridiculous misunderstanding at home.”
“There is no joint account anymore,” I replied. “Thomas and I froze the estate assets two hours ago. Every credit card in your wallet is a useless piece of plastic. The Mercedes you drive is being reported as unauthorized use. If you want bail, you’ll have to call a bondsman and use your own personal savings.”
There was a long, stunned silence on the line. “You have no authority to do that! That is my husband’s money!”

“It was never yours,” I corrected her. “And neither is the house. You’re homeless, Mother. Enjoy the cell.”
I hung up and blocked the number.
