Chapter 14 - The Plea Hearing

Two months later, the criminal trial loomed. The DA had built an airtight case. With the forged checks, the hidden ledger, and the damning security footage, the defense attorney knew they had absolutely zero chance in front of a jury.

My mother and sister requested a final plea hearing.

Elena and I sat in the front row of the courtroom. My mother looked entirely broken. Her dyed hair had grown out to reveal stark gray roots. She had lost weight, and her arrogant posture had crumbled into a defeated slouch. Chloe looked like a ghost, trembling constantly.

The defense attorney addressed the judge. “Your Honor, my clients wish to change their pleas to guilty on all counts of felony assault, reckless endangerment, and wire fraud, in exchange for a recommended sentence.”

The judge looked at the prosecutor. “Does the state have a recommendation?”

The prosecutor turned to Elena. “The victim has submitted an impact statement and a sentencing request.”

Elena stood up. She didn't tremble. She didn't cry. She looked directly into the eyes of the women who had tormented her for three years.

“They left me to freeze to death so they could steal my husband’s money,” Elena said, her voice echoing clearly through the silent courtroom. “I do not forgive them. I request the maximum penalty under the law.”
