Chapter 17 - The Greenhouse

Spring arrived, melting the last remnants of the bitter winter.

Contractors swarmed the estate for two months. They tore up the icy stone patio where Elena had nearly lost her life and replaced it with a beautiful, sprawling glass greenhouse. Elena filled it with orchids, ferns, jasmine, and climbing roses.

The scent of damp earth and blooming flowers replaced the sterile, cold atmosphere my mother had always enforced.

I officially retired from the Navy. I took a job as a logistics consultant for a local shipping firm, ensuring I would never have to spend another night away from my wife. We spent our evenings cooking together in the massive kitchen, drinking wine, and laughing—real, genuine laughter that echoed through the halls.

One evening, while we were sitting in the greenhouse surrounded by blooming jasmine, Elena handed me a small, wrapped box.

“What’s this?” I asked, looking at her glowing, happy face.

“Just open it,” she smiled.

I pulled the ribbon and opened the lid. Inside, resting on a bed of tissue paper, was a tiny pair of white knitted baby socks.

My heart completely stopped. I looked up at her, entirely speechless.

“We’re going to be parents, Marcus,” she whispered, tears of joy welling in her eyes.
