Chapter 2 - The Digital Witness

The two officers stepped into the foyer, bringing a blast of freezing wind with them. My mother gestured toward the formal living room, offering them hot coffee with a sickeningly sweet smile. They declined.
I pulled out my phone, my hands shaking not from the cold, but from the raw, concentrated rage burning through my veins. I opened the security app connected to the exterior and interior cameras of the property.
“You’re making a mistake, Marcus,” my mother hissed under her breath as the officers gathered around my screen. “She’s unbalanced. You’ve been gone for three years. You don’t know what we’ve endured.”
I ignored her and hit play on the footage from an hour ago.
The screen showed the patio door. The high-definition video captured Elena washing dishes in the kitchen. Suddenly, Chloe shoved her hard from behind. Elena stumbled outward onto the freezing stone patio. The audio picked up my mother’s voice, sharp and cruel: “Let her cool off outside. She needs to remember who owns this house.”
Then, the footage showed Chloe sliding the heavy glass door shut, locking the deadbolt, and drawing the curtains. For forty-five minutes, the camera showed Elena shivering, knocking, and begging to be let in, until she finally collapsed on the ice.
The lead officer looked up from the screen. His eyes were hard as granite. He unclipped his radio. “Dispatch, we have a confirmed domestic assault and reckless endangerment. Send a second transport unit.”

My mother’s face went entirely slack. “Now wait just a minute—”
“Ma'am, turn around and place your hands behind your back,” the officer ordered, reaching for his cuffs.
