Chapter 15 - The Sentencing

The judge nodded solemnly, reviewing the files one last time before looking down at my mother and sister.

“This court has seen many cases of greed,” the judge said, his voice echoing with absolute authority. “But the sheer cruelty displayed in this case—to lock a family member in freezing temperatures while you sat inside and drank wine—shows a profound lack of human empathy.”

My mother closed her eyes, a single tear cutting through the dirt on her cheek.

“On the charges of felony assault and wire fraud, I sentence you, Beatrice Vance, to ten years in the state penitentiary, without the possibility of parole for seven years.”

My mother let out a loud, agonizing wail, collapsing against the defense table.

“And to you, Chloe Vance,” the judge continued, ignoring the outburst. “For your active participation in the assault and fraud, I sentence you to six years in the state penitentiary.”

The bailiffs stepped forward, grabbing them by the arms and dragging them away. As she was pulled toward the heavy wooden doors, Chloe looked back at me, her eyes wide with terror and regret.

“Marcus! Please!” she screamed.

I didn't move. I reached over, took Elena’s hand in mine, and watched the heavy doors close on my toxic family forever.
