Chapter 7 - The Boathouse Ambush

The tunnel ended at a rusted iron door. Damiano pressed his ear to the cold metal. Only the sound of the Hudson River lapping against wooden pylons echoed back.
He kicked the door open, sweeping the boathouse with his weapon. It was clear. The sleek, black speedboat bobbed gently in the water.
"Get in," he ordered.
Clara climbed in, reaching back for Elara. Just as Damiano handed his daughter over, the boathouse doors blew open. Four of Renato’s men stormed in, automatic weapons raised.

Damiano didn't dive for cover; he dove between the guns and his family. He fired mid-air, taking down the first two men with lethal headshots. A bullet grazed his shoulder, tearing through his suit jacket and burning like a hot iron, but he didn't stop. He rolled, sweeping the leg of the third man, and shot the fourth in the chest.
He tossed the mooring line, jumped into the driver's seat, and slammed the throttle. The boat roared to life, tearing out into the gray mist of the Hudson River just as Renato arrived at the docks, screaming in rage.
