Chapter 10 - Gathering the Wolves

Damiano picked up a burner phone and dialed a number he hadn't used in five years. The phone rang once before a gravelly voice answered.

"I thought you were dead, Boss."

"Not yet, Enzo," Damiano replied. "Did you make it out of the courtyard?"

"Barely. Lost three good men. I'm holed up in Brooklyn with the remaining loyalists. Renato put a million-dollar bounty on your head. The whole underworld is looking for you."

"Let them look. I need you to contact Don Falcone, Don Moretti, and Don Russo. Tell them I invoke the Rite of the Commission. Midnight tonight. Neutral ground."

Enzo hesitated. "Boss, if you show up, Renato will bring an army. It’s a suicide mission."

"I’m bringing proof of syndicate treason," Damiano said coldly. "And Enzo? Bring the heavy artillery. We aren't going to talk; we're going to clean house."

He hung up. Clara was watching him from the doorway, her arms wrapped around herself.

"You're going back out there," she whispered.

Damiano walked over, cuping her face in his hands. "I will return to you. I swear it on my life."
