Chapter 5 - Descent into the Dark

Gunfire erupted near the main house. Damiano pulled Clara behind a stone fountain as heavily armed mercenaries swarmed the courtyard.
"They're executing the loyalists," Damiano snarled, watching his men fall. There were too many to fight head-on. "The tunnels. We take the smuggler's route."
Beneath the Hudson estate lay a network of Prohibition-era tunnels built by his grandfather. Only the bloodline knew the entrance. Damiano led Clara and Elara to the old mausoleum at the edge of the property. He pressed a sequence of stones on his father’s tomb, and the heavy marble floor groaned, sliding open to reveal a pitch-black stairwell.
"Go," he urged, pushing Clara inside.
Before he could follow, a bullet struck the stone inches from his head, showering him with marble dust. He spun around. Standing fifty yards away, flanked by a dozen gunmen, was Renato.

Renato smiled, a sickening, triumphant grin. "Going somewhere, Boss?"
Damiano fired three suppressing shots, forcing Renato’s men to duck, and dove into the dark, hitting the release lever to seal the tomb above them.
