Chapter 13 - The Rat Flees

Renato didn't wait for the meeting to adjourn. He pulled a hidden derringer from his sleeve, fired a wild shot toward the table, and sprinted for the side exit of the cathedral.
Chaos erupted. Enzo’s men opened fire, but Renato’s personal guards engaged them, creating a bloody chokepoint at the altar.
Damiano ignored the crossfire. He ducked under a flying pew, his eyes locked onto the retreating figure of his betrayer. He moved with terrifying purpose, slipping through the side door into the rainy alleyway.

Renato was scrambling into a waiting armored SUV. Damiano raised his weapon and fired at the tires, blowing out the rear left. The SUV fishtailed, crashing violently into a brick wall at the end of the alley.
Damiano walked slowly toward the smoking wreck. The rain plastered his hair to his forehead, washing the dust from his suit. He was no longer just a boss; he was the grim reaper, come to collect a twenty-year debt.
