Chapter 6 - The Underworld

The damp air of the tunnels smelled of earth and old secrets. Clara clicked on a small flashlight she had taken from the guards, its beam cutting through the gloom. Elara was remarkably quiet, her small arms wrapped tight around Damiano’s neck.
"He's going to bury us down here," Clara whispered, her breath visible in the cold air.
"These walls are reinforced steel and bedrock. He can't break through," Damiano said, marching forward. "But they will wait for us at the exit. The tunnel leads to the river. I have a speedboat stashed in the boathouse."
As they moved, Damiano couldn't stop looking at Elara. She had his jawline, his stubborn chin, but Clara's luminous eyes. A fierce, primal protective instinct roared to life inside him. He had spent his life managing a criminal empire he never wanted; now, he finally had something worth killing for.

"I'm sorry," Clara whispered as they walked. "I should have fought harder. I should have told you."
"You protected my life," Damiano replied softly. "Now, I protect yours. Forever."
