Chapter 15 - The Execution

Damiano didn't scream. He didn't monologue. He simply raised his weapon and shot Renato in both kneecaps.
Renato’s screams echoed off the brick walls, a horrific, guttural sound that was instantly swallowed by the thunderstorm. He thrashed on the ground, clutching his shattered legs.
"That is for my father," Damiano said coldly.
He aimed the gun at Renato’s right hand and fired again.
"That is for Clara."
Renato was weeping now, begging for death, all arrogance completely stripped away. Damiano stepped closer, pressing the hot barrel of the gun against Renato’s forehead.
"And this," Damiano whispered, the image of little Elara’s amber eyes flashing in his mind, "is for my daughter."

A single shot rang out in the alleyway. The screaming stopped.
Damiano stood in the rain for a long moment, watching the blood wash away into the storm drains. The heavy ache in his chest—the one that had plagued him for twenty years—finally fractured, letting in a sliver of peace.
