Chapter 6 - The Forensic Discovery

The document sitting on my iPad screen was a masterpiece of financial destruction, compiled by the top forensic accounting firm in New York. As I scrolled through the pages, the full extent of Marcus’s deceit over the past four years came into glaring focus.
Marcus hadn’t just been unfaithful; he had been systematically siphoning money from my personal accounts for over two years. Because I had trusted him blindly, I had allowed him to manage what he thought was my "modest inheritance fund." Instead of using it to pay our joint taxes or mortgage as he claimed, he had been diverting thousands of dollars a month into a secret offshore shell account.
Even worse, the audit revealed how he had funded Chloe’s lavish lifestyle. The custom jewelry, the luxury maternity wardrobe, the five-star vacations he claimed were "solo business trips"—all of it had been paid for using corporate funds stolen directly from client retainers at Vance Design Group.
"He embezzled two million dollars from his own escrow accounts," I said, my voice cold and steady as I looked up at my grandfather. "He used client deposits to buy Chloe an apartment in Miami and lease a Ferrari."
Arthur sipped his black coffee, unimpressed by Marcus’s amateur criminality. "Greed makes fools arrogant, and arrogance makes them sloppy. The federal authorities have already received an anonymous tip regarding the escrow discrepancies. By tomorrow morning, this won't just be a civil divorce matter. It will be a federal indictment."
I looked back through the glass at Maya, whose chest was rising steadily. Marcus had told me I was nobody. He had left me bleeding and terrified in a hospital chair, confident that I would break under the weight of his abandonment.

I turned to my grandfather’s lead attorney, Jessica Pierce, a woman renowned for being a shark in the courtroom. "Jessica, I want to accelerate the divorce proceedings. I don't want a settlement. I want a public trial. Let him try to present that forged document to a judge."
Jessica smiled, her eyes gleaming with anticipation. "With pleasure, Miss Sterling. The trap is already set."
