Chapter 17 - The First Birthday Celebration

The sun shone brightly over the Westchester hills as four hundred acres of manicured lawn were transformed into a magical wonderland. Today was Oliver and Maya’s first birthday—a day Marcus had once declared they would never live to see.
The estate grounds were filled with laughter, music, and colorful balloons. I hadn't just invited society elites and corporate directors; I had invited the entire medical team from Mercy General’s NICU, along with thirty families who had been helped by the Sterling Neonatal Hope Foundation over the past year. Dozens of former premature babies, now healthy toddlers and infants, played safely on the soft grass.
Oliver and Maya sat in matching high chairs under a massive floral gazebo, their faces smeared with organic vanilla birthday cake. Oliver was giggling hysterically as he tried to feed a piece of frosting to our golden retriever, while Maya clapped her hands, her dark curls bouncing with every movement.
Dr. Vance walked up to me, holding a glass of iced tea as he watched the twins smash their cake. "If you had told me a year ago, when they were weighing two pounds in those incubators, that they would be this energetic today, I would have called it a medical miracle."
"It is a miracle, Doctor," I smiled, wiping a tear of happiness from my cheek. "A miracle built on love, science, and a little bit of Sterling stubbornness."

Grandfather walked over, leaning on his cane, though his step was lighter than it had been in years. He wore a custom linen suit and a bright, genuine smile that rarely graced the face of the feared corporate titan. He reached into his pocket and pulled out two velvet boxes, placing them on the table in front of the twins.
"A first birthday gift for my heirs," Arthur said proudly. Inside each box was a delicate, custom-made platinum bracelet, engraved with their names and the Sterling family crest—a permanent symbol of their unbreakable heritage.
