Chapter 1 - The Footsteps of a Giant

The heavy silence in the NICU was broken only by the rhythmic, mechanical beeping of the infant monitors. Marcus stood frozen near the doorway, his hand slowly sliding off Chloe’s waist. The name Elena Sterling had never meant anything to him—to him, I was just Elena, the quiet orphan with a modest monthly stipend and an unassuming lifestyle. He had no idea that my grandfather was Arthur Sterling, the ruthless titan of Sterling Healthcare Global, a man who owned the ground beneath Marcus's Italian leather shoes.
Within eight minutes, the double doors of the neonatal floor swung open with a resounding crash. Four men in dark suits with earpieces stepped through, flanking an elderly man with silver hair leaning on a polished cane. His eyes, sharp as obsidian shards, scanned the room before locking onto me. Then, his gaze shifted to the ink-stained folder in Marcus’s hands and the custom camel-hair cape draped over Chloe’s shoulders.
"Grandfather," I breathed, tears finally blurring my vision.
Arthur Sterling didn’t look at Marcus. He didn't need to. He gestured sharply to his head of security. "Clear the trash from my hospital floor," he commanded, his voice rumbling with quiet, terrifying authority. "And lock down this entire wing. No one approaches my granddaughter or my great-grandchildren without my explicit authorization."
Marcus puffed out his chest, attempting to salvage his bruised ego. "Now wait just a minute! I’m her husband, and I have legal rights—"
Before Marcus could finish his sentence, two massive security guards seized him by the arms, twisting them behind his back with practiced efficiency. Chloe shrieked, dropping her designer handbag as a female security officer stepped between her and my incubator pods.

"You have no rights here, Mr. Vance," Arthur said coldly, stepping closer until Marcus shrank back. "You made your choice when you handed a dying mother divorce papers. Get out before I have you arrested for trespassing."
As they were dragged screaming into the hallway, Chloe’s manicured fingers desperately clawed at my cape, but the security officer stripped it from her shoulders, leaving her shivering in her silk maternity blouse. They were thrown into the elevator like bags of refuse, their public humiliation witnessed by the entire hospital staff.
