Chapter 10 - The Courtroom Showdown

Three weeks later, the Family Court of New York was packed to the brim. The media had caught wind of the sensational story: the secret billionaire heiress who had been abandoned in a neonatal ward by her fraudster husband. Reporters waited outside the courthouse doors, cameras flashing as Grandfather and I walked up the marble steps surrounded by security.
Inside the courtroom, Judge Eleanor Vance—a no-nonsense veteran of family law—sat high on the bench, staring down at Marcus with undisguised disgust. Marcus looked completely broken. In the span of a month, he had lost his firm, his home, his reputation, and his freedom; he was currently out on bail awaiting trial for federal embezzlement.
"Mr. Vance," Judge Eleanor spoke, her voice echoing in the silent room. "I have reviewed the supposed 'post-nuptial dissolution agreement' you submitted to this court. I have also reviewed the medical records from Mercy General Hospital, which confirm that Miss Sterling had lost nearly two liters of blood and was on high-dose narcotics at the exact hour you forced her to sign this document."
Marcus stood up, his legs shaking. "Your Honor, she read it! She knew what she was signing!"
"Sit down, Mr. Vance, before I hold you in contempt of court," the judge barked, her gavel slamming against the sound block. "In my thirty years on the bench, I have rarely seen an act of such moral turpitude, cowardice, and extreme cruelty. You attempted to abandon two critically ill infants and their mother while systematically stripping them of their financial security."
She picked up the folder containing Marcus’s forged agreement and tore it cleanly in half, letting the pieces drop onto her desk.
"This document is hereby declared null and void, dismissed with prejudice," the judge ruled decisively. "Full sole legal and physical custody of the minor children, Oliver and Maya Sterling, is awarded exclusively to the mother, Elena Sterling. Mr. Vance is stripped of all parental rights, visitation privileges, and legal claims to the Sterling family estate."
I let out a breath I felt like I had been holding for four long years. Beside me, Jessica gently squeezed my hand in congratulations.

"Furthermore," the judge continued, her eyes narrowing at Marcus, "all remaining marital assets, including the proceeds from the liquidation of Vance Design Group, are awarded to Miss Sterling as restitution for fiduciary fraud and marital waste. We are adjourned."
As the gavel slammed down for the final time, Marcus collapsed back into his chair, burying his face in his hands as the realization of his absolute ruin finally crushed him.
