Chapter 3 - The First Domino Falls

The next morning, Marcus and Chloe woke up in the luxury townhouse they believed they had successfully stolen from me. Judging by the social media posts Chloe uploaded at 8:00 AM, they were already celebrating. She posted a photo posing with a glass of non-alcoholic champagne on my marble kitchen island, captioned: “New beginnings with my king. Out with the old, in with the luxury. #VanceLife #Blessed.”
She didn't know that her "king" was building his castle on quicksand.
At precisely 9:30 AM, Marcus arrived at his boutique architectural firm, Vance Design Group, expecting to celebrate his clean break and massive financial windfall. Instead, he found the lobby swarming with forensic accountants and federal marshals.
His lead project manager ran up to him, sweating profusely. "Marcus! What the hell is going on? Apex Development just pulled out of the downtown skyscraper project! They canceled the contract twenty minutes ago!"
Marcus blanched. "What? They can't do that! That contract is worth forty percent of our annual revenue!"
"It gets worse," his assistant stammered, holding up a shaking tablet. "The bank just froze our operating accounts. Payroll didn't go through. The branch manager said there’s an emergency lien on all Vance Design assets due to fraudulent capitalization."
Marcus stormed into his glass-walled office and slammed his hand on the desk, desperately dialing his primary financial backer—a mysterious venture capital fund that had invested five million dollars to get his firm off the ground three years ago.
The call connected, but instead of his usual account manager, a crisp, female legal voice answered the line.
"Mr. Vance," the attorney said smoothly. "I am calling to formally notify you that Sterling Capital Venture Partners is calling in its initial five-million-dollar demand loan, effective immediately, due to violation of moral and fiduciary ethics clauses."

"Sterling Capital?" Marcus gasped, his heart dropping into his stomach as the name echoed in his mind. Arthur Sterling. Elena Sterling. "No... that's impossible. My wife—my ex-wife—she's a nobody!"
"Your ex-wife," the attorney replied coldly, "is the sole heiress to the Sterling empire and the majority shareholder of this fund. You have forty-eight hours to vacate the premises before assets are seized."
