Chapter 16 - An Unexpected Encounter

Three months into my new role as Executive Vice President, my work with the foundation took me to a charity fundraiser at an exclusive downtown hotel. I was the keynote speaker for the evening, standing before a ballroom of three hundred wealthy donors, sharing the story of Oliver and Maya's miraculous recovery to raise funds for our newest NICU wing in Chicago.
After the speech, as guests mingled over champagne and hors d'oeuvres, I excused myself to visit the restroom in the quiet outer lobby. As I approached the marble sinks to check my lipstick, a woman in a basic black catering uniform emerged from one of the stalls, carrying a stack of used hand towels.
We both froze.
It was Chloe.
The transformation was shocking. The haughty, glamorous mistress who had smirked at me in the hospital was completely gone. Her hair was pulled back into a messy, unstyled bun; her skin was pale and drawn, and her posture was slumped from exhaustion. She looked at my custom silk evening gown, then down at her own stained catering apron, her face flushing with deep, humiliating crimson.
"Elena," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the lobby music.
I didn't feel anger anymore. Looking at her now, all I felt was a cold, distant pity. She was a woman who had traded her dignity and morals for a fleeting illusion of wealth, only to be left with nothing when the illusion shattered.
"Hello, Chloe," I said calmly, turning back to the mirror to adjust my diamond earrings.
"I... I saw your speech on the monitor in the kitchen," she stammered, her hands shaking as she clutched the dirty towels. "Your babies... they look really healthy. I'm glad they made it."

"They are thriving," I replied softly, my tone polite but impenetrable. "Excuse me. My guests are waiting."
I walked out of the restroom without looking back, leaving her standing alone in the shadows of the ballroom she used to dream of ruling. The past had no power over me anymore.
