Chapter 4 - The Eviction Notice

While Marcus was watching his business empire evaporate in real-time, Chloe was busy hosting an impromptu brunch for her pretentious socialite friends at the townhouse. She had raided my closet, wearing my designer silk robes and flaunting my jewelry collection as if she had earned it.
The doorbell rang at noon. Chloe pranced to the front door, expecting the gourmet catering she had ordered using Marcus’s credit card.
Instead, she opened the door to find two uniformed sheriff's deputies and a stern-looking property manager holding a clipboard. Behind them stood four moving men with large empty boxes.
"Ma'am, are you Chloe Jenkins?" the deputy asked, stepping into the entryway without waiting for an invitation.
"Yes? And who do you think you are, barging into my private residence?" Chloe snapped, crossing her arms over her baby bump.
The property manager handed her a thick legal document. "This is an emergency writ of possession and notice of immediate eviction. This property is owned by the maternal trust of Elena Sterling. Mr. Vance’s name was merely listed as a residential occupant at the discretion of the trust. That discretion has been revoked."
Chloe’s jaw dropped. "You're lying! Marcus owns this house! He showed me the divorce papers! She signed everything over to him!"
"A signature obtained under medical duress in an intensive care unit holds zero legal validity, Miss Jenkins," the property manager said coldly. "Furthermore, Mr. Vance attempted to transfer a deed that was never in his name to begin with. That constitutes real estate fraud."

The deputies motioned for the movers to enter. "You have exactly thirty minutes to collect your personal belongings—only what you brought into this house—and vacate the premises. If you attempt to remove any property belonging to Miss Sterling, you will be arrested for grand larceny."
Chloe’s socialite friends, who had been sipping mimosas in the living room, immediately began grabbing their purses, whispering frantically among themselves as they scurried out the door. Chloe collapsed onto the front steps, sobbing hysterically as she dialed Marcus’s number again and again, only to get a busy signal.
