Chapter 7 - Checkmate in Public

Richard intercepted them before they could reach the center of the ballroom. His face was a mask of barely contained fury.

"You have exactly ten seconds to leave before I have security drag you out, Clara," Richard hissed under his breath, mindful of the hundreds of cameras flashing around them.

"You don't own this venue, Richard," Elias replied casually, plucking a glass of champagne from a passing waiter and handing it to Clara. "In fact, I purchased the Plaza Hotel this morning. So, technically, you are trespassing on my property."

Richard’s jaw clenched. "What is your game, Thorne? You want money? Name your price."

Clara took a step forward, her eyes blazing with a fire that Julian had always loved, and the Sterlings had always feared.

"I don't want your money, Richard. I want Julian's legacy. And I want you to look at my left hand."

Clara raised her hand. Resting perfectly on her ring finger was the simple silver band.

Eleanor, having rushed over, gasped audibly. "Graves... you found Graves."

"Thomas Graves was very cooperative after a brief conversation about his life expectancy," Elias noted dryly. "He sends his regards. And his full written confession regarding the forged will."
