Chapter 20 - The One Ring They Should Never Have Stolen

In a maximum-security prison far upstate, Richard Sterling sat in his sterile cell. The lights flickered, casting long shadows against the concrete walls. He had nothing left. His fortune was gone, his wife was in a different facility, and his legacy had been overwritten by the very woman he tried to destroy.

A guard walked by, sliding a small manila envelope through the food slot in the door.

Richard slowly stood and picked it up. His hands trembled as he tore it open.

Inside was a single photograph. It was a clipping from a financial magazine, showing Clara and Elias Thorne standing side by side, looking powerful, wealthy, and fiercely in love, cutting the ribbon on the new Julian Sterling Memorial Hospital wing.

Attached to the photo was a small, handwritten note.

You took my silver ring. I took your world. Consider the debt fully paid. — Clara.

Richard let the photograph slip from his fingers, fluttering to the cold floor. He sat on his cot, buried his face in his hands, and finally wept.

Miles away, Clara Thorne closed her eyes, listening to the rain fall against the window, safe, loved, and victorious. The storm was finally over.
