Chapter 16 - The Retaliation

Elias didn't just send a message; he sent a nightmare. Within twenty-four hours, Volkov’s safe houses were raided, his lieutenants vanished, and his supply lines were burned to the ground.
Elias personally cornered Volkov in a meatpacking plant on the edge of the city. The Russian boss was bloodied and chained to a chair by the time Elias walked into the freezer room.
"You think you can protect her forever?" Volkov spat, blood dripping from his chin. "She is a civilian. She will break."
Elias pulled a combat knife from his belt. "She is not a civilian. She is my equal. And you made the fatal mistake of aiming at my queen."
Later that evening, Elias returned to the penthouse. Clara was waiting for him, pouring two glasses of scotch. She handed him one, her eyes tracing the blood splatter on his cuffs. She didn't ask what happened. She didn't need to.
