Chapter 1 - The Weight of the Umbrella

Richard Sterling’s threat hung in the icy air of the foyer, but Clara Vance was no longer listening to the echo of his voice. She was staring at the man standing outside the gates in the pouring rain.

Elias Thorne did not wait for an invitation. At a subtle gesture from his hand, his men moved. The heavy wrought-iron gates of the Sterling estate, designed to withstand a ram-raid, were forced open by two men in tactical gear with a hydraulic spreaders in a matter of seconds. The metal groaned and snapped like dry twigs.

"What is the meaning of this?" Richard barked, stepping forward, his calm demeanor finally cracking. "Call the police! Now!"

Elias ignored him. He walked up the driveway, the charcoal umbrella shielding him from the downpour, and knelt beside Clara. His dark eyes, devoid of any warmth, scanned her bleeding knees, her swollen cheek, and the sheer desperation in her posture.

"You called in the debt," Elias said, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that barely carried over the rain.

"They took the ring," Clara whispered, her voice cracking. "Julian’s ring. It’s not just a ring, Elias. You have to get it back."

Elias stood slowly. He looked past her, fixing his gaze on the open double doors of the grand hall where Richard and Eleanor stood, flanked by their bewildered security guards.

"Keep her dry," Elias ordered one of his men, handing over the umbrella. He adjusted his jacket, the fabric pulling taut over his broad shoulders, and walked up the marble steps. The game had just changed, and the Sterlings had no idea they were playing against the house.
