Chapter 9 - The Uncle's SecretElise backed away from Thomas until her spine hit the window glass. "You... you were in the car?"

Thomas let out a dark chuckle, adjusting his expensive silk tie. "Chloe and I had a very mutually beneficial arrangement back in those days. She loved my money and the narcotics I could provide. I loved her... wild nature. We were driving back from a rather chaotic party that night. She was high. It was raining."

"You hit Maya," Elise breathed out, putting the horrific pieces together. "Damien’s own sister. Your niece!"

"It was an accident," Thomas said dismissively, waving his hand as if swatting a fly. "But if I had gone to the police, Arthur would have cut me out of the family trust entirely. I couldn't risk my inheritance. So, I told Chloe to drive away. I paid her a massive sum to keep her mouth shut. It worked out perfectly... until she overdosed."

"Why didn't you stop Damien from coming after me?" Elise demanded, tears of fury spilling down her cheeks.

"Because Damien was getting too close to the truth!" Thomas hissed, stepping violently into her personal space. "His private investigators were digging too deep. When he found that traffic cam photo of you—or rather, Chloe—it was the perfect scapegoat. I encouraged his revenge plot. I wanted him so blinded by his hatred for you that he’d never look in my direction."

Thomas reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, lethal-looking syringe. "But now, you've ruined it with your little confession. If Damien finds out the truth, I lose everything."
