Chapter 13 - The True Monster

Thomas, realizing he was completely cornered, let out a dark, pathetic laugh. He spat blood onto the expensive Persian rug and glared up at his family.
"Maya was a mistake," Thomas hissed, all pretense of familial love vanishing. "Chloe was high, it was raining, and Maya was walking on the side of the road like an idiot. It was an accident! I wasn't going to let my entire life be ruined over an accident!"
Arthur’s face turned the color of stone. The man who had always been the calm, collected patriarch of the family looked like he was ready to commit murder.
"You let us bury her," Arthur whispered, his voice dangerously low. "You stood at her grave, held my wife's hand, and told us we would find the person responsible. For five years, you watched us drown in grief."
"And I would have gotten away with it," Thomas sneered, glaring at Elise, "if this stupid girl hadn't shown up with her dead sister's face."
Damien couldn't hold back anymore. He dove at his uncle, his fists flying in a blind rage. He struck Thomas over and over again, the pent-up agony of five years unleashing itself in a violent torrent.
"Damien, stop! You'll kill him!" Elise screamed, stepping out of Martha's arms.

Arthur finally intervened, grabbing his son and pulling him off the bloody, bruised form of his brother. "He's not worth going to prison for, Damien. Let the law have him."
Martha, her face tear-streaked but fiercely resolved, had already dialed 911. "The police are on their way."
