Chapter 10 - The Race Against Time

Meanwhile, Damien was racing back to the Willow Creek estate, pushing his sports car far past the speed limit. The passenger seat was littered with the photographs and documents proving Chloe’s existence.
Guilt, sharp and agonizing, tore at his chest.
He had tortured the woman he loved. He had turned the best day of her life into a psychological slaughterhouse. He remembered the sheer terror in Elise's eyes when he cornered her, and he felt violently sick to his stomach. She wasn't a monster; she was a victim carrying the heavy, shameful burden of a destructive twin sister.
His phone buzzed on the dashboard. It was the private investigator he had hired years ago, Marcus. Damien answered it on speaker.
"Damien, I got the file you asked me to cross-reference on that silver sedan," Marcus’s gritty voice filled the car. "I ran the passenger side reflections through the new enhancement software we got last month."
"Did you find something?" Damien asked, his heart hammering.
"Yeah. The driver was definitely the girl in the photo. But she wasn't alone. I managed to enhance a reflection in the side mirror. The passenger was a Caucasian male, mid-fifties. Distinctive signet ring on his right hand."
Damien slammed on the brakes, the car skidding onto the gravel shoulder of the highway. His breath stopped.

A signet ring. The gold family crest ring. The one his Uncle Thomas never, ever took off.
"Thomas," Damien whispered into the void of the car. "He was with her."
