Chapter 7 - The Journey to the Truth

Damien drove the two hours into Seattle like a man possessed. His knuckles were white against the steering wheel. He had stolen Elise's apartment keys from her bridal purse.

When he unlocked the door to her modest, neat apartment, a wave of profound cognitive dissonance washed over him. The apartment smelled of lavender and vanilla—Elise's signature scent. There were beautiful watercolor paintings on the wall. It looked like the home of the gentle, kind woman he had fallen in love with, not a ruthless killer.

He tore the place apart anyway.

He emptied drawers, ripped open file boxes, and scoured her closets. For hours, he found nothing but old tax returns and college essays. Just as he was about to give up and conclude that she had lied, he noticed a loose floorboard beneath her bed.

Prying it up with a screwdriver, Damien extracted a small, locked metal lockbox. He smashed the lock with a hammer. Inside was a thick, dusty manila folder.

Damien opened it. Dozens of photographs spilled out onto the bed.

His breath caught in his throat. Staring back at him were two identical girls. They had the same auburn hair, the same delicate bone structure, the same emerald eyes. One was Elise, smiling softly in a graduation gown. The other was a girl with heavy dark makeup, a rebellious sneer, and a silver nose ring.
