Chapter 8 - The Gala Showdown

Every year, the city hosted the Diamond Charity Gala, the most exclusive social event for New York’s elite.

Historically, I had attended on Julian’s arm, wearing an approved dress, smiling silently for the cameras like a perfect accessory.

This year, I arrived in a custom, shimmering gold gown that cost more than a luxury car.

I walked the red carpet alone, exuding a fierce independence that made the paparazzi lose their minds.

Inside the grand ballroom, the whispers started the moment I made my entrance.

I spotted Julian across the room, wearing a tuxedo, desperately trying to schmooze a group of wealthy investors.

Chloe was clinging to him, wearing an overly flashy diamond necklace that I recognized immediately.

It was a piece from his mother’s collection, one that legally belonged to the estate—my estate.

I grabbed a glass of champagne from a passing tray and walked directly toward them, parting the crowd like Moses.

“Julian, Chloe, so brave of you to show your faces in high society tonight,” I said loudly enough for the investors to hear.

Julian’s jaw tightened, and he instinctively stepped in front of Chloe to shield her.

“Walk away, Elena. Don't make a scene in front of my business partners,” he muttered through gritted teeth.

I smiled warmly at the confused investors, holding up my hand to show off Eleanor’s vintage emerald ring.

“Oh, I wouldn't dream of it. I just came to collect my stolen property,” I said lightly.

I turned my gaze to Chloe, my eyes dropping to the glittering diamonds around her neck.

“Take off the necklace, Chloe, before I have the police arrest you for possession of stolen estate property right here in the ballroom.”
