Chapter 1 - The Echo of the Gavel

The heavy oak room fell so silent you could hear the ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner.

Julian’s chest heaved as he stared at the estate attorney, his eyes wide with a manic disbelief.

“Read that again,” he demanded, his voice trembling with a rage I had never heard before.

The attorney, Mr. Sterling, did not flinch or look away from my husband.

“The terms are absolute, Mr. Vance,” Sterling replied calmly, adjusting his glasses.

“Your mother, Eleanor Vance, left her entire estate, all liquid assets, and her seventy-two percent controlling stake in Vance Global Shipping to Elena.”

Chloe, who had been smirking just moments before, suddenly looked like she had swallowed a lemon.

She gripped Julian’s arm tightly, her acrylic nails digging into his expensive suit jacket.

“Julian, do something!” she hissed, her voice shrill and echoing off the walls.

Julian yanked his arm away from her, his face turning a dangerous shade of crimson.

“This is a mistake, a forgery, or she manipulated my dying mother!” he shouted, pointing a shaking finger at me.

I sat there, perfectly still, feeling a strange, intoxicating warmth spread through my veins.

For four years, I had shrunk myself to fit into his world, walking on eggshells to appease his ego.

Now, sitting in this stuffy legal office, the invisible chains around my neck shattered.

“Eleanor was perfectly sound of mind,” Mr. Sterling stated, sliding a certified medical document across the table.

“In fact, she updated this will three weeks ago, right after she discovered your impending divorce.”

Julian froze, the realization hitting him like a physical blow to the stomach.

His mother had known about Chloe, about the affair, and about his cruel plan to leave me with nothing.

I slowly stood up, smoothing the front of my black funeral dress, feeling taller than I had in years.

“I believe this meeting is over, Julian,” I said, my voice shockingly steady and cold.

“I have a shipping empire to run, and you have a mistress to soothe.”

I turned on my heel and walked out the heavy mahogany doors, leaving them both suffocating in the silence.
