Chapter 19 - Justice Served

Julian’s federal fraud trial finally concluded almost two years after he handed me those divorce papers.
I didn't attend the trial, preferring to read the summaries provided by my legal team from the comfort of my office.
The jury deliberated for less than four hours before returning a guilty verdict on all forty-two counts of fraud.
The judge was merciless, noting Julian’s complete lack of remorse and his arrogant behavior throughout the trial.
He was sentenced to fifteen years in a federal penitentiary, with no chance of early parole for at least ten years.
When I read the final headline on my tablet, I didn't cheer or open a bottle of champagne.
I simply closed the tab, took a sip of my coffee, and went back to reviewing the quarterly shipping reports.
Julian had become entirely irrelevant to my life, a ghost from a past I barely recognized anymore.
I heard rumors through the social grapevine that Chloe had moved to a small town in the Midwest.
She was reportedly working as a waitress, raising her child far away from the toxic world she had tried to steal.
It was a quiet, sad ending for them both, but it was exactly what they had earned.
