The next forty-eight hours were a masterclass in legal destruction.
Because Brian had carelessly left his laptop at our house, Marcus sent an associate to retrieve it.
We found every hidden offshore account and secret credit card he used for Jessica.
Marcus filed an emergency injunction with a judge, citing domestic abuse and financial fraud.
Before Brian could move a single dime to protect his mistress, all of his accounts were completely frozen.
I sat in Marcus's towering glass office, watching the chaos unfold on his speakerphone.
Brian called my phone exactly seventy-four times.
When I finally answered, he was sobbing uncontrollably.
He begged me to unfreeze the accounts, crying that his credit cards were declining at the grocery store.
Jessica was threatening to leave him because he could no longer pay the rent on the luxury townhouse.
I felt absolutely no pity for the man whining on the other end of the line.
I asked him if he remembered how Lily sounded when she whimpered in pain.
I reminded him that he wanted me to let our daughter suffer just so his mother could eat a hot meal.
He tried to apologize again, but I hung up the phone and blocked his number.
