Chapter 5 - The Ambush at the Hospital

Brian somehow managed to track us down by calling the pediatricians in the area.

He burst into the hospital room just after lunch, holding a cheap bouquet of flowers.

He put on his best sorrowful face, ready to deliver a rehearsed apology.

His fake smile vanished the second he saw Marcus standing by the window.

Brian took a step back, his face draining of all color.

He knew exactly who Marcus was, and he knew that my brother despised him.

Brian tried to recover, puffing out his chest to look authoritative.

He demanded that Marcus leave his wife and daughter's room immediately.

Marcus did not move an inch.

Instead, I stood up and walked toward my husband.

I did not scream, and I did not cry.

I calmly handed him a printout of the health insurance document showing Jessica and Leo's names.

Brian looked at the paper, and his arrogant posture completely collapsed.

He started stuttering, trying to invent a lie about identity theft or an administrative error.

I slapped him across the face, mirroring the exact strike he had given me the night before.

The sound echoed sharply against the sterile hospital walls.

He grabbed his cheek in shock, staring at me as if I were a ghost.

I told him that I knew everything, including his mother's involvement.

Then I told him to get out of my sight before I called hospital security.
