Chapter 3 - The Second Life

By morning, Lily's fever had finally broken, and she was sleeping peacefully.

I, however, had not slept a single second.

Marcus returned to the hospital room carrying a thick manila folder.

His investigators had worked through the night, and what they found was horrifying.

Brian had rented a luxury townhouse on the other side of the city.

He had been siphoning money from our joint savings account for the past three years.

He disguised the transfers as bad investments and stock market losses.

In reality, he was funding a lavish lifestyle for Jessica, a woman he had met on a business trip.

Even worse, the investigator discovered that Donna frequently visited the townhouse.

My mother-in-law knew about the affair the entire time.

She had been playing with her secret grandson while treating my daughter and me like worthless servants.

That was why she was so desperate to keep me in the kitchen last night.

She wanted me completely distracted and subservient while she hosted a dinner for her friends.

I felt physically sick to my stomach.

I had spent years trying to win Donna's approval, scrubbing her floors and cooking her meals.

All while she was laughing behind my back, protecting her son's double life.

A cold, hardened resolve replaced the tears in my eyes.

I was not just going to leave Brian.

I was going to utterly destroy him.
