Chapter 2 - The Secret Dependent

The doctors finally came out to give us an update on Lily.
Her fever had spiked due to a severe, untreated kidney infection.
If I had waited that extra hour to finish cooking dinner for Donna, Lily's organs could have started shutting down.
A wave of nausea washed over me as I realized how close I came to losing my little girl.
While I sat by Lily's hospital bed, Marcus went to the billing department to handle the insurance paperwork.
When he returned, his face was pale, and he held a stack of printed documents in his hand.
He locked the hospital room door and pulled up a chair next to me.
He asked me if Brian had ever mentioned updating his employer-sponsored health insurance policy.
I shook my head, completely confused by the question.
Marcus handed me the paperwork with a grim expression.
According to the hospital's database, Brian had added two dependents to his family plan six months ago.
One was a woman named Jessica Harper.
The other was a two-year-old boy named Leo.
The air was sucked out of my lungs as I stared at the printed names.
My husband was paying for the medical care of another woman and a child.
Marcus placed a steady hand on my shoulder.

He had already tasked his private investigative team to dig into Brian's life.
The flawless, perfect husband I thought I had was nothing but a carefully constructed lie.
