Chapter 4 - The Narcissist's Apology

My phone vibrated on the hospital tray table.

It was a text message from Brian.

He wrote a long, pathetic paragraph about how stressed he was at work.

He claimed the slap was an accident, a reflex because he was overwhelmed by his mother's nagging.

He ended the message by demanding to know what hospital I was at so he could bring me coffee.

He was still trying to control the narrative, pretending he was the victim of his own temper.

I handed the phone to Marcus, who scoffed in disgust.

I did not reply to Brian's messages.

Instead, I listened to the three voicemails left by Donna.

In the first voicemail, she yelled at me for ruining the dinner party and embarrassing her in front of her country club friends.

In the second, she threatened to call the police and claim I kidnapped Lily.

In the third, her tone changed to a sweet, manipulative purr, telling me to come home so we could pretend nothing happened.

They thought I was weak and isolated.

They thought I would crawl back because I had nowhere else to go.

They had no idea that I was sitting next to one of the most ruthless corporate lawyers in the state.

Marcus pulled out his laptop and began drafting a legal bloodbath.

We were going to freeze the bank accounts before Brian even realized I knew the truth.
