Chapter 8 - The Media Spin Machine

By six o'clock the following morning, Julian Vance’s highly paid public relations crisis team had launched a full-scale narrative offensive across local and regional media outlets. I sat at the wooden kitchen table with Marcus, sipping black coffee while we watched the live broadcast on a secure monitor connected to an encrypted proxy server.

On the screen, Julian stood outside his gated mansion, wearing a clean, conservative suit with a carefully placed bandage over his right elbow. He was flanked by two high-powered corporate defense attorneys and a publicist, speaking into a battery of news microphones with a practiced expression of profound sorrow and victimization.

"Yesterday afternoon, my family experienced a terrifying ordeal," Julian said to the reporters, his voice trembling with manufactured emotion. "My father-in-law, Mr. John Sterling—a man who has sadly struggled with severe anger management and PTSD issues since leaving the military—forced his way into my home, violently assaulted me, and forcibly abducted my wife, Sarah, while she was suffering from a severe psychological crisis."

A reporter thrust a microphone forward. "Mr. Vance! Is it true that your wife was injured during the altercation?"

"Yes, tragically," Julian replied, wiping a fake tear from the corner of his eye. "Sarah has been dealing with severe depression and self-harm tendencies for months. When I tried to prevent her from hurting herself yesterday, her father broke in and misinterpreted the situation. He attacked me without warning and dragged her away from the specialized medical care she desperately needs. I am pleading with John to return my wife to a hospital immediately before her condition deteriorates further."

I clenched my jaw so hard my teeth ached, reaching out to slam the laptop lid shut, but Marcus caught my wrist, shaking his head calmly.

"Let him talk, John," Marcus said with a cold, analytical smirk. "Every lie he tells on federal airwaves is another brick in the prison cell we're building for him. He’s committing public defamation, filing false police reports, and setting up an alibi that we are about to demolish with empirical forensic evidence. His PR team thinks they’re fighting a standard domestic divorce battle. They don't realize they’ve stepped onto a digital battlefield controlled by defense intelligence veterans."
