Chapter 6 - The Sanctuary in the Woods

I drove for forty-five minutes without saying a word, watching the rearview mirror constantly to ensure no security vehicles or local police were tailing us from the Vance estate. Instead of heading back to my house—which I knew Julian’s lawyers would target with emergency injunctions within the hour—I took the highway west toward the Blue Ridge Mountains. We were heading to a secure, unlisted property owned by my old friend and brother-in-arms, Marcus Vance, a retired Marine Force Recon specialist who now operated one of the most elite private intelligence and cybersecurity firms in Washington, D.C.
By the time the tires crunched onto the hidden gravel driveway of Marcus’s mountain cabin, darkness had settled over the dense Virginia forest. The cabin looked like a simple, rustic log home from the outside, but I knew it was equipped with state-of-the-art perimeter sensors, reinforced ballistic glass, and an independent satellite communication array that bypassed commercial cell towers entirely.
The heavy front door opened before I even turned off the ignition. Marcus stepped out onto the porch, a burly, six-foot-three veteran with a graying beard, wearing tactical cargo pants and a thermal sweater. When he saw me carefully helping Sarah out of the truck, his relaxed greeting instantly vanished, his jaw setting into a hard, familiar line of military readiness.
"John," Marcus said, stepping down to take Sarah’s other arm, his eyes scanning her bruised face with professional fury. "Get her inside immediately. I've got the medical kit already open on the kitchen table, and the perimeter security system is armed to maximum sensitivity."

"We need clean water, ice packs, and a digital camera, Marcus," I said as we guided her into the warmth of the cabin, settling her onto a plush leather sofa near a crackling stone fireplace. "We need to document every single contusion, laceration, and mark on her body before the swelling changes. We are doing everything by the book, because Julian is going to try to spin this into a kidnapping."
"Let him try," Marcus growled, handing Sarah a warm blanket and a mug of sweet tea before pulling out a high-resolution professional field camera from his desk. "I saw the alert hit the local police scanners ten minutes ago. Vance’s people are already calling the chief of police, claiming an unstable intruder assaulted him in his home. It’s time we activate the network, John. This bastard wants a war? We'll give him a full-scale tactical campaign."
