Chapter 14 - The Legal Counter-Offensive

While the chaos at the charity gala was still dominating late-night news broadcasts across the country, we were already executing Phase Two of our campaign. At eight o'clock on Sunday morning, a convoy of three black SUVs pulled up to the front steps of the United States Federal Courthouse in downtown Richmond.

The plaza was swarming with dozens of reporters, camera crews, and photographers who had received an anonymous tip that the real story behind the Vance scandal was about to break. As my security detail formed a protective cordon around us, Sarah and I stepped out of the lead vehicle. She looked stunningly regal, wearing a sharp navy suit, her head held high, the fading bruises on her cheekbone visible to every camera lens snapping furiously in the morning light.

We walked straight up the marble steps into the office of the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. Waiting for us at the mahogany conference table was Assistant U.S. Attorney Katherine Vance—no relation to Julian—a hard-nosed federal prosecutor known for dismantling corporate corruption with ruthless efficiency.

"Colonel Sterling, Mrs. Vance," the prosecutor said, standing up to shake our hands. "We watched the broadcast last night, and my office has been reviewing the preliminary digital evidence your cyber team uploaded to our secure portal at midnight. It is... staggering."

"We didn't come here just to clear my name of false kidnapping charges, Counsel," I said, placing two massive, three-inch-thick binders of printed financial evidence and a chain-of-custody hard drive directly onto the center of the table. "We came here to hand you a fully packaged federal RICO case, wire fraud indictment, and domestic assault with bodily injury charges against Julian Vance."

Sarah sat forward, looking the prosecutor dead in the eye without a trace of intimidation. "Inside those binders are the exact account numbers, routing codes, and offshore shell companies my husband used to launder forty million dollars of illicit funds using my forged identity. I am prepared to waive all marital privilege and testify against him in open court on every single count."

The prosecutor opened the first binder, her eyes scanning the meticulous forensic audits prepared by David Chen and Frank Rossi. A slow, sharp smile spread across her face. "Mrs. Vance, with this level of empirical evidence, Julian won't just be denied bail; he’ll be lucky if he sees the outside of a federal supermax facility before he turns eighty. We are signing the emergency arrest and asset freeze warrants right now."
